There have been instances reported in which providers have placed medication orders by typing “free-text” into nursing communication (“p-care”) orders.
DO NOT DO THIS.
Medications ordered this way are not seen in the pharmacy system, and thus are not profiled by pharmacy and will not be seen in the nurse’s medication administration system. This could then result in the patient not receiving the medication.
All medication orders should be placed using the appropriate CPOE order for that medication.
